Irene Sewankambo facts for kids

Irene Kaggwa Sewankambo is a talented Ugandan electrical engineer and a leader in big companies. She currently works as the Director of Engineering and Communication Infrastructure at the Uganda Communications Commission (UCC). From 2020 to 2023, she was also the temporary head of the UCC.

Irene was born in Uganda. She is known for being very good at her job and for her strong leadership skills.

Early Life and School Days

Irene started her education at Kitante Primary School in Kampala, Uganda. For her middle and high school, she went to Mount Saint Mary's College Namagunga. There, she earned a diploma in Mathematics, Physics, and Chemistry. After that, she was accepted into Makerere University to study electrical engineering.

Her Amazing Education

Irene has several important degrees. She earned her first degree, a Bachelor of Science in Electrical Engineering, from Makerere University. This is Uganda's oldest and largest public university. She then went on to get a second degree, a Master of Science in Communications Systems and Signal Processing, from the University of Bristol in the UK. She also holds another Master of Science degree in Economic Management and Policy from the University of Strathclyde.

Leading the Way in Communications

Before February 2020, Engineer Sewankambo was already a director at the Uganda Communications Commission (UCC). She was in charge of how Uganda's communication systems work. Before that, she led the research and development team at UCC. She also helped coordinate things in the executive director's office.

In February 2020, Judith Nabakooba, who was the Minister of Information and Communications Technology at the time, chose Irene Sewankambo to be the temporary Executive Director of the UCC. She took over from Engineer Godfrey Mutabazi. In November 2023, after almost four years in that temporary role, she returned to her original job as Director of Engineering and Communication Infrastructure. George William Nyombi Thembo then became the new permanent Executive Director.
