Irene di Spilimbergo (born October 27, 1538 – died December 17, 1559) was a talented Italian Renaissance painter and poet. She lived during the exciting time of the Renaissance, a period of great art and learning in Italy.

Early Life and Artistic Talent

Irene was born in Spilimbergo, a small town in Italy. Even from a young age, she showed a strong talent for art. She was often compared to another famous woman painter of her time, Sofonisba Anguissola.

Irene was very lucky to study art with one of the greatest painters ever, Titian. She learned from him for two years. This was a huge opportunity for a young artist in the 1500s.

A Legacy in Poetry

Although Irene was a painter, she is mostly known for her poetry. After she died, a collection of her poems was published. This book included 279 poems in Italian and 102 in Latin.

Many famous writers and artists of the time contributed to this collection. Some of these well-known figures included Torquato Tasso and Lodovico Dolce. The book helped keep Irene's memory alive.

Her Paintings Today

It is hard to find many of Irene's own paintings today. However, two important artworks are kept at the National Gallery of Art in Washington, D.C.

One painting is a portrait of her sister, Emilia di Spilimbergo. It was painted by Gian Paolo Pace, who was a student of Titian. The other painting is a portrait of Irene herself. It is believed to be a collaboration between Gian Paolo Pace and Titian.

Irene di Spilimbergo passed away in Venice when she was only 21 years old. Despite her short life, she left a mark as both a painter and a poet during the Italian Renaissance.
