Ironbark facts for kids
Ironbark is a common name for several types of Eucalyptus trees. These trees are special because they have very dark, rough bark with deep grooves. It looks a bit like iron, which is how they got their name!
Most eucalyptus trees shed their bark every year, like snakes shedding their skin. But Ironbark trees are different. Their old, dead bark stays on the tree. Over time, this bark dries out and forms those deep grooves you see. It also fills with a dark red tree sap called kino.
This tough bark is very helpful. It protects the tree from fire and heat. Even if a big fire burns off the leaves and small branches, the bark keeps the living parts of the trunk safe. It also protects special buds hidden under the bark. These are called epicormic buds, and they allow the tree to grow new shoots and leaves after a fire.
