Early Life and Vegan Journey
Isa grew up in Brooklyn, New York. She went to The High School of Music & Art to study fine art, but she left school early. In the late 1980s, she became interested in the punk rock music scene in Manhattan. This led her to first become a vegetarian, meaning she didn't eat meat. Later, she became fully vegan.
Isa also volunteered with an organization called Food Not Bombs. This group provides free vegan meals to people who are homeless or in need.
Her Cooking Career
Isa Chandra Moskowitz is a well-known name in the plant-based cooking world. In 2023, a food website called Tasting Table named her one of the "21 Plant-Based Chefs You Need To Know." Also, VegNews magazine listed her as one of the "37 Creative Chefs Crafting the Future of Vegan Food."
The Post Punk Kitchen Show
Isa got the idea for her own cooking show while watching the Food Network. She wondered why there were no shows about vegan cooking. So, she decided to create Post Punk Kitchen. The show's name, The Post Punk Kitchen, meant growing up and making choices that might be different from what their younger selves would have done. The show aired from 2003 to 2005.
Isa's Restaurants
In April 2008, Isa moved from New York to Portland, Oregon. Later, she moved to Omaha, Nebraska. She opened her first restaurant, Modern Love, in Omaha in 2014. A few years later, in 2016, she opened a second Modern Love restaurant in Brooklyn, New York.
Amazing Cookbooks
Because The Post Punk Kitchen show was so popular, Isa decided to write a cookbook. Her first book, Vegan with a Vengeance, came out in late 2005. Since then, she has written many more cookbooks.
In 2024, Food & Wine magazine listed two of her books, Veganomicon and Isa Does It: Amazingly Easy, Wildly Delicious Vegan Recipes for Every Day of the Week, as some of the "20 Best Vegan Cookbooks for Every Type of Meal."
VegNews magazine also recognized several of her books in 2024. They listed Veganomicon, Superfun Times Vegan Holiday Cookbook, Vegan Brunch, Isa Does It, and I Can Cook Vegan among their "Top 100 Vegan Cookbooks of All Time."

Animal Rights Activism
Isa Moskowitz is a strong supporter of animal rights. She believes in treating animals kindly and promotes this through what she calls "Culinary Activism" or "Baketivism." This means using cooking and baking to help animals.
After the big 2010 Haiti earthquake, Isa used her blog to ask vegans to hold bake sales in their cities. The money raised from these bake sales would go to help people affected by the earthquake. This effort was very successful, raising over $75,000!
