The Isaac Palmer House is a really old and special home in Branford, Connecticut. It was built around 1810. This house is a great example of a building style called Federal architecture, which was popular a long time ago. Because it's so important, it was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1988. This means it's officially recognized as a historic landmark!

Discovering the Isaac Palmer House

This house is located just west of downtown Branford. You can find it on the north side of Main Street, right where Cedar Street joins in. It's a two-and-a-half-story building made of wood. The outside is covered with overlapping wooden boards called clapboards.

What Does the House Look Like?

The roof of the house slopes down on two sides, which is called a side-gable roof. Originally, it had a chimney right in the middle, but you can't see it from the roof anymore. The front of the house has five sections, called bays.

The windows are arranged neatly around the main front door. Each window has a decorative top piece called a cornice. The front door itself is special. It has tall, narrow windows on each side, called sidelights. The door is also framed by wide, flat columns called Doric pilasters. Above the door, there's a fancy block of wood, an entablature, and another projecting cornice.

How the House Has Grown

To the right side of the main house, there's a two-story section that sticks out. This is called an "ell." It was added to the house later. At the back of the property, there's also a garage that was built in the 1900s.

A Glimpse into History

The Isaac Palmer House was built around 1810. It was likely built by a person named Linus Robinson. He probably built it just before he sold it to John Hobart and Edmund Palmer.

The house stayed in the Palmer family for most of the 1800s. Over time, it has been divided into two separate living spaces. It stands today as a reminder of early American architecture and the history of Branford.
