Isaac Trumbo facts for kids

Kids Encyclopedia Facts

Isaac Trumbo (1858–1912) was an important businessman and a colonel in the California National Guard. He was born in Nevada and spent his childhood in Salt Lake City, Utah. Isaac had strong connections to the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, often called the Mormon Church. His grandfather, Colonel John Reese, was a founder of Nevada and also a Mormon.

Isaac Trumbo's Dream for Utah

Isaac Trumbo had a big dream: he wanted Utah to become a state in the United States. At the time, Utah was a territory, which meant it didn't have the same rights as a state. Trumbo worked hard as a lobbyist in Washington D.C. A lobbyist is someone who tries to convince government officials to support a certain cause. His efforts were very important. Thanks to people like Trumbo, Utah finally became a state in 1896.

Life After Statehood

After Utah became a state, Isaac Trumbo and his wife moved back to Salt Lake City in 1895. They lived in the Gardo House. This was a large, grand home that was once owned by Brigham Young, an early leader of the Mormon Church. Later, it became the official home for the church president.

Trumbo became involved in politics, joining the Utah Republican Party. He hoped to be chosen as one of Utah's first two U.S. Senators. Becoming a Senator would have been a great reward for his work on statehood. However, he was not chosen. Some people who were not Mormon worried that Trumbo was too close to the interests of the Mormon Church.

Later Years

After this, the Trumbos moved back to San Francisco. Even so, Isaac Trumbo kept a close friendship with Wilford Woodruff, who was the president of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. Wilford Woodruff even passed away at Trumbo's home in 1898.

In 1911, Trumbo lost his home on Sutter Street because he could not pay the mortgage. He died in November 1912.
