Isabella de' Medici, by Alessandro Allori
This painting shows Isabella de' Medici when she was 16 years old. It was painted by Alessandro Allori.

Isabella Romola de' Medici (born August 31, 1542 – died July 16, 1576) was an important Italian noblewoman. She was the daughter of Cosimo I de' Medici, who was the first Grand Duke of Tuscany, and Eleonora di Toledo. Isabella received a special education that focused on classic subjects like history and languages. She studied alongside her brother, Francesco de' Medici, who later became the Grand Duke. To make friends with the powerful Roman Orsini family, Isabella's father arranged for her to marry Paolo Giordano I Orsini when she was 16. Even after her marriage, she stayed living with her father. This gave her more freedom than most women had back then. After her father died, Isabella passed away suddenly. Many historians believe she was murdered, possibly with the help of her husband and brother.

Isabella's Life

Isabella was born in Florence, a famous city in Italy. She lived with her brothers and sisters in grand palaces like the Palazzo Vecchio and later the Palazzo Pitti. She also spent a lot of time at her family's country home, Villa di Castello.

The Medici children were taught at home by private teachers. They learned many subjects, including ancient history, different languages, and various arts. From a young age, Isabella loved music very much. She used music to express herself as an adult.

Isabella was known for her beauty. She had a lively, energetic, and sometimes impulsive personality. People who worked at the court often talked about how spirited she was.

Her Marriage and Family

In 1553, when Isabella was 11 years old, she was promised in marriage to 12-year-old Paolo Giordano I Orsini. He was set to become the Duke of Bracciano, a region in southern Tuscany. Isabella's father thought this marriage was important. It would help protect his southern border and strengthen his family's ties with the old Roman Orsini family.

Isabella and Paolo were married in 1558 at Villa di Castello. It was a small, private ceremony. Paolo left the very next day. Isabella's father, Cosimo, was worried about Paolo's spending habits. So, he decided to keep Isabella and her large dowry (a sum of money given to the husband) in Florence. This decision gave Isabella more freedom and control over her life than was usual for women in Florence at that time.

After her mother passed away, Isabella took on the role of the first lady of Florence for a while. She showed a natural talent for politics, just like other members of the Medici family.

Isabella had some difficulties having children. She remained childless until her late twenties. Her daughter, Francesca Eleonora (also called Nora), was born in 1571. Nora later married her cousin, Alessandro Sforza. Isabella's son, Virginio, was born in 1572. He later inherited his father's title as Duke.

Her Sudden Death

Isabella's lively personality led to some rumors. People talked about her close friendship with Troilo Orsini, who was Paolo Giordano's cousin. Troilo was in charge of looking after Isabella while her husband was away on military duties.

On July 16, 1576, Isabella died suddenly at the Medici villa in Cerreto Guidi. She was there for a hunting trip. Isabella's death was the second sudden death in an isolated country villa for the Medici family. Her cousin, Leonora, had died from a similar "accident" just a few days before.

Most historians believe that Paolo Giordano killed Isabella. They think he did this because of her close friendship with Troilo Orsini. Some also believe he acted on orders from Grand Duke Francesco, Isabella's brother. However, one historian, Elisabetta Mori, believes Isabella de' Medici died of natural causes. She argues that the rumors of murder were spread by people who disliked the Medici family.

Art and Paintings

There are several paintings of Isabella that still exist today. Some of them were painted by Alessandro Allori. One painting, which shows her from the right side, is also thought to be by Allori. This painting is owned by the Carnegie Museum of Art. It was cleaned and restored in 2014, as a Victorian-era face had been painted over the original.
