Isabella de Warenne (born around 1253 – died before 1292) was an important lady in medieval times. She became the Lady of Balliol when she married John Balliol. There is some question about whether she was still alive when her husband became the King of Scotland.
Isabella's Family
Isabella was the second of three children. Her father was John de Warenne, 6th Earl of Surrey. Her mother was Alice de Lusignan. Alice was also the half-sister of Henry III of England, a powerful king.
Isabella had an older sister named Eleanor. Eleanor married Henry Percy. They became the parents of Henry de Percy, 1st Baron Percy. Isabella also had a younger brother named William. Sadly, their mother died when William was born. William later died in a knight's tournament. He had married Joan de Vere and had two children.
Her Life and Marriage
Isabella married John Balliol around February 9, 1281. John Balliol had a claim to the Scottish throne, meaning he believed he had a right to become king. Their marriage lasted for about ten years.
Isabella and John Balliol had at least one child:
- Edward Balliol (died 1364) – He later tried to become King of Scotland, so he is called a pretender. Edward married Marguerite de Taranto, but their marriage ended without children.
Some historians believe Isabella and John might have had other children too:
- Henry de Balliol – He was killed in a battle called the Battle of Annan in 1332. He did not have any children.
- Agnes (or Maud) de Balliol – She married Bryan FitzAlan, Lord FitzAlan. They had a daughter named Agnes FitzAlan, born in 1298.
It is thought that Isabella died before 1292. This means she likely did not live to see her husband become King of Scotland. However, some people think she might have lived long enough to see him become king and then give up his throne.
