High School and College Basketball
Early Years and College Success
Isaiah Hicks was a very talented basketball player in high school. In his final year at J. F. Webb High School, he was chosen to play in the 2013 McDonald's All-American Boys Game. This game features the best high school basketball players in the United States. After high school, he decided to play college basketball for the North Carolina Tar Heels.
During his junior year at North Carolina, Isaiah received the ACC's Sixth Man of the Year Award. This award goes to the best player who usually comes off the bench instead of starting the game. He scored 17 points in a big win against Texas Southern in the first round of the NCAA tournament.
Winning a National Championship
Isaiah Hicks played a key role in the Tar Heels' journey to the National Championship game in 2017. In that important game, he scored 13 points and grabbed 9 rebounds. His team, the North Carolina Tar Heels, won the championship by defeating Gonzaga. This was a huge achievement in his college career.
Professional Basketball Career
Playing for the New York Knicks
After college, Isaiah Hicks was not chosen in the 2017 NBA draft. However, he still got a chance to play professionally. The Charlotte Hornets signed him for their training camp. Even though he was later released, he soon signed a special "two-way contract" with the New York Knicks on October 20, 2017.
A two-way contract allows a player to play for both an NBA team and its minor league team, which is called an NBA G League affiliate. For Hicks, this meant playing for the New York Knicks and their G League team, the Westchester Knicks. He made his official NBA debut on February 8, 2018, playing against the Toronto Raptors. He signed another two-way contract with the Knicks the following year.
Playing Internationally
In August 2019, Isaiah Hicks began his international basketball career. He signed with a Russian team called BC Avtodor, which plays in the VTB United League. He played well there, averaging about 12.8 points and 6.7 rebounds per game.
In July 2020, Hicks moved to South Korea. He signed with the Seoul Samsung Thunders in the Korean Basketball League (KBL). He played for them for two seasons, re-signing in June 2021.
After his time in South Korea, Hicks moved to Japan in July 2022. He signed with the San-en NeoPhoenix team, which plays in Japan's B.League. In July 2023, he returned to the Korean Basketball League, signing with the Daegu KOGAS Pegasus. Unfortunately, he had an injury (an Achilles tendon rupture) in October 2023 and was replaced on the team.
Despite the injury, Isaiah Hicks continued his career. On June 20, 2024, he signed with another Korean team, the Seoul SK Knights, where he currently plays.
