Isamu Kosugi (小杉 勇, Kosugi Isamu, 24 February 1904 – 8 April 1983) was a famous Japanese actor and film director. He was known for his strong acting skills and unique style. He starred in many important Japanese movies, especially in the 1930s. Later in his career, he also directed films.

Isamu Kosugi's Film Journey
Isamu Kosugi was born in a place called Ishinomaki in Miyagi Prefecture, Japan. He first went to a special acting school called the Nihon Eiga Haiyū Gakkō. In 1925, he joined a big movie studio called Nikkatsu.
Becoming a Star
Kosugi quickly became well-known for his acting. He starred in movies that showed real-life problems, sometimes called tendency films. One of his early famous roles was in Ikeru ningyō (1929).
In the 1930s, he was the main actor in many popular and well-reviewed movies. These films were made at Nikkatsu's Tamagawa studio. Some of his most famous roles were in Jinsei gekijō (1936) and Tsuchi (1939). These were both directed by Tomu Uchida. He also starred in war films like Gonin no sekkōhei (1938) and Mud and Soldiers (1939), directed by Tomotaka Tasaka.
International Work and Unique Style
In 1937, Isamu Kosugi worked on a special movie called Atarashiki tsuchi. This film was a co-production between Germany and Japan. It was also known as Die Tochter des Samurai. It was directed by Arnold Fanck and Mansaku Itami. At the time, Kosugi was famous for being a very skilled actor with his own special way of performing.
Directing Films
After World War II, Isamu Kosugi started directing movies. He mostly worked at the Nikkatsu studio. He directed comedy series and action films. He even directed movies starring the actor Jō Shishido. While directing, he also continued to appear in films as an actor.
Isamu Kosugi's son was Taichirō Kosugi. Taichirō became a composer and created music for the famous anime series Cyborg 009.
