Kids Encyclopedia Facts

Iseut de Capio was a noblewoman and a poet from a region in France called Gévaudan. She was born around 1140. Iseut was a trobairitz, which is the name for a female troubadour or poet from that time.

Iseut lived at the same time as another trobairitz named Almucs de Castelnau. They wrote a special kind of poem together called a tenso. This tenso is the only poem by Iseut that we still have today.

We don't know everything about where Iseut de Capio came from. But we do know she was from a castle area called Capione. Today, this place is known as either Chapieu or Chapelins.

This castle was built on top of Mont Mimat, a mountain above the river Mende. Iseut might have been part of the powerful Tournel family. This family ruled one of the main areas in Gévaudan, where Chapieu was located.

Her Famous Poem

Iseut and Almucs de Castelnau wrote a tenso together. A tenso is a poem where two poets have a conversation or debate. Before their poem, there is a long story called a razo. A razo explains the background of the poem.

The razo tells us that Iseut asked Almucs to forgive a knight named Gigo. Gigo was the lord of Tournon. He was Iseut's knight, but he had done something very wrong to Almucs.

Gigo did not say sorry or ask for forgiveness. So, Almucs wrote her part of the poem to answer Iseut's request. This poetic exchange probably happened around the year 1190.
