Iseut de Capio was a talented noblewoman and poet from a region in France called Gévaudan. She was born around the year 1140. Iseut was known as a trobairitz, which is the name for a female troubadour. Troubadours were poets and musicians in the Middle Ages who wrote and performed songs, often about love and chivalry.
Iseut lived near another trobairitz named Almucs de Castelnau. They even wrote a poem together called a tenso. A tenso is like a debate or conversation in poetry, where two poets exchange stanzas. This tenso is the only work by Iseut that we still have today.

Her Home and Family
Iseut came from a place called Capione, which was a castle. Today, this place might be Chapieu or Chapelins. This castle stood high up on a mountain called Mont Mimat, overlooking the river Mende.
It's thought that Iseut might have been part of the powerful Tournel family. They were important lords in Gévaudan. The Tournel family owned the area where Capione was located.

A Story of Forgiveness
The tenso that Iseut wrote with Almucs de Castelnau has a special story that goes with it. This story is called a razo, which means an explanation. The razo tells us why the two poets wrote their poem.
The story says that Iseut asked Almucs to forgive a knight named Gigo. Gigo was Iseut's knight, and he had done something wrong to Almucs. But Gigo didn't say sorry or try to make things right. So, Almucs replied to Iseut's request in her own part of the poem, called a cobla (which means a stanza or verse). This poetic exchange probably happened around the year 1190.
