The Ishpeming Municipal Building is an important public building in Ishpeming, Michigan. You can find it at 100 East Division Street. Many people also call it the Ishpeming City Hall. This building is special because it was named a Michigan State Historic Site in 1980. A year later, in 1981, it was added to the National Register of Historic Places. This means it's a really important historical place in the United States!

A Look Back: The Building's History

The Ishpeming City Hall was built a long time ago, between 1889 and 1891. This was a time when iron mining was a huge industry in the area, and Ishpeming was growing fast! A talented architect named Demetrius F. Charlton from Milwaukee designed the building.

When it first opened, the building was home to many important city services. It had offices for the city government, a public library, and even a space for the city's police and holding cells. Today, the building is still used by the city of Ishpeming for its government offices, helping to run the city.

What the Building Looks Like

The Ishpeming City Hall is a two-story building shaped like a rectangle. It's made from strong Portage Entry sandstone and brick, sitting on a solid foundation of concrete and rubble.

The front of the building has a cool, rounded archway for the entrance. You'll also notice fancy sandstone decorations around the windows. There's a special decorative band, called a beltcourse, that runs between the first and second floors. The roof has two parts that cross each other, called intersecting gables.

At one corner of the building, there's a tall, square tower. It has a pointy, pyramid-shaped roof on top. There's also a smaller, one-story part of the building that used to hold the city's jail. This section has a sloped roof called a hipped roof.
