Isidoro Arredondo (born 1655, died 1702) was an important Spanish painter. He was born in a town called Colmenar de Oreja in 1653. Arredondo became famous for his beautiful paintings, especially those showing historical events and religious stories.

He learned his painting skills from two different teachers. First, he studied with José García Hidalgo. Later, he learned from another well-known artist, Francisco Rizi.

Becoming a Royal Painter

Isidoro Arredondo was very good at painting historical scenes. When his teacher Francisco Rizi passed away in 1685, Arredondo was chosen for a very special job. He became the official painter for Charles II of Spain, who was the king at that time. This was a great honor for an artist.

Famous Artworks

Arredondo created many impressive paintings. One of his most important works was a large painting called 'The Incarnation'. An art historian named Antonio Palomino wrote about how grand and wonderful this painting was.

Other famous paintings by Arredondo include:

  • Santa Clara (Saint Clare), which he finished in 1693.
  • Santa Gertrudis (Saint Gertrude).

He used both oil paints and fresco techniques for his art. Fresco painting means painting directly onto wet plaster walls, often found in churches and palaces. One of his best-known fresco works is 'The Legend of Cupid and Psyche'. You can find this beautiful artwork in the Royal Palace of Madrid.

Isidoro Arredondo continued to paint many artworks for churches and royal buildings throughout his life. He passed away in Madrid in 1702.
