Isidre Molas i Batllori (born 12 October 1940) is a Catalan politician and historian. He was the fifth President of the Socialists' Party of Catalonia from 2008 to 2011. He has also served as a Senator for Barcelona since 2000.
Early Life and Studies
Isidre Molas was born in Barcelona, Catalonia, in 1940. His father, Isidre Molas i Font, was a musician. Isidre Molas is also the brother of Joaquim Molas i Batllori, who is a well-known historian and writer.
In 1963, Molas finished his law degree at the Autonomous University of Barcelona. During his student years, he was very active in groups that worked against the government of the time. He joined the Front Obrer de Catalunya (Workers' Front of Catalonia) and the Frente de Liberación Popular (Popular Liberation Front). These groups were part of a movement that wanted more freedom and democracy. Because of his activities, he faced legal issues in 1962.
Political Career
After Spain became a democracy, Isidre Molas started his political career. In 1980, he was chosen as a representative in the Parliament of Catalonia. He served in this role until 1988.
From 1985 to 2008, he was the President of the Socialists' Party of Catalonia (PSC) in the Province of Barcelona. This meant he led the party's activities in that area.
In 2000, Molas was elected as a Senator for Barcelona. He was chosen by the Catalan Agreement of Progress, which is a group of left-leaning parties in Catalonia. As a Senator, he represents the people of Barcelona in the Spanish national parliament.
Besides his political work, Isidre Molas has also translated many books. He has written articles about political science, which is the study of how governments work.
