Ismael Fernández de la Cuesta (born 1939) is a Spanish singer and music expert. He is especially known for his knowledge of Gregorian chant. This is a very old style of church music.

Ismael Fernández de la Cuesta was born in a small village called Neila in Spain. When he was young, he joined the Abbey of Santo Domingo de Silos. This is a special monastery. He studied music in France for a while.

After his studies, he returned to the Abbey. From 1962 to 1973, he was the leader of the Abbey's choir. Later, he became a teacher at the Madrid Royal Conservatory. He taught Gregorian chant there until he retired.

Famous Music Recordings

Ismael Fernández de la Cuesta has helped create many recordings of Gregorian chant. One of his most famous works is the album called Chant. This album featured the monks from Santo Domingo de Silos. It became a best-selling classical music record in 1994.

He also directed performances of Mozarabic chant in 1970. This was another old style of music, also with the Santo Domingo de Silos choir. Even though the monks usually sing Gregorian chant, Mozarabic chant is still sometimes used in Spain today.

Special Awards

Ismael Fernández de la Cuesta has received an important honor. He was given the Civil Order of Alfonso X, the Wise. This is a special award from Spain.
