Cadmus's Quest and the Dragon's End

The hero Cadmus was a prince from a land called Phoenicia. He was searching for his lost sister, Europa. The Oracle of Delphi told him to stop searching. Instead, he should follow a special cow. Where the cow lay down, he should build a new city. This place turned out to be near the spring of Ares.

Cadmus needed water for a sacrifice to the gods. He sent his companions to get water from the spring. However, the Ismenian Dragon attacked them. The dragon killed many of Cadmus's men. When Cadmus realized what had happened, he went to the spring himself. He found the dragon guarding the water.

The Dragon's Legacy

After killing the dragon, the goddess Athena appeared to Cadmus. She told him to plant the dragon's teeth in the ground. When Cadmus did this, armed warriors sprang from the earth. These warriors were called the Spartoi, meaning "sown men."

The Spartoi immediately began fighting each other. Only five of them survived this battle. These five survivors helped Cadmus build the city of Thebes. They became the ancestors of the noble families of Thebes. The story of the Ismenian Dragon is an important part of the founding myths of this famous Greek city.
