Swan Point is a lovely place in southern Charles County, Maryland, in the United States. It's what we call an unincorporated community. This means it's not an official city or town with its own local government. Instead, it's a group of homes and businesses that share a common area. Swan Point is especially known for its beautiful waterfront and a fun country club.

Discovering Swan Point

Swan Point is located right on the banks of the Potomac River. This river is a very important waterway in the eastern United States. The nearby area of Issue, Maryland, is also considered part of Swan Point. This is because they share the same postal code, 20645, since 2009.

The Swan Point Yacht and Country Club

One of the most exciting parts of Swan Point is the Swan Point Yacht and Country Club. It was first planned and started in the 1980s. The main attraction was an 18-hole golf course right by the water.

Over the years, many more cool things have been added to the club:

  • A community swimming pool by the water.
  • A marina, which is a place where boats can dock.
  • A clubhouse where people can gather.
  • Trails for walking or biking.
  • Tennis courts for playing sports.

Homes in Swan Point

The community has many different kinds of custom homes. These homes are built on wooded lots that are about one-third to one-half an acre in size. Some homes have amazing views of the water. Others are right on the water or next to the golf course. There are even plans to build more homes in the future, including smaller cluster homes, townhouses, and more single-family houses.

How Swan Point Got Its Name

There are a couple of interesting stories about how Swan Point got its name.

Captain John Smith's Story

One popular story says that Captain John Smith named the area. He was a famous explorer who explored this region in the early 1600s. The legend says that when he was exploring, he saw thousands of swans spending the winter in the water off that piece of land. He might have thought, "This looks like a point where swans gather!"

Edward Swann's Land

However, historical research suggests another reason for the name. An early settler of Maryland named Edward Swann was given a large piece of land, about 1200 acres, by Lord Baltimore. Most of this land was in Charles County, Maryland. It's very likely that Swan Point was named after Edward Swann, who owned so much land in the area.
