A Big Protest in 2011
In October 2011, something unusual happened on the Italian Wikipedia. People who volunteer to write and edit Wikipedia articles decided to protest. They did not like a new law that the Italian government was thinking about.
Why They Protested
From October 4 to October 6, 2011, all articles on the Italian Wikipedia were hidden. If you tried to visit the site, you would only see a message. This message explained why they were protesting. The new law was being discussed in the Chamber of Deputies. This is part of the Italian Parliament, where laws are made.
First Time for Wikipedia
This was the first time any Wikipedia project had ever hidden all its content to protest a law. The Wikimedia Foundation, which runs Wikipedia, supported this protest. They released a statement on October 4, saying they agreed with the short shutdown.
Impact of the Protest
During the protest, the message explaining the shutdown was seen about 19 million times. On October 6, 2011, the articles were put back online. A banner was added to the top of each page. This banner continued to explain why the protest happened.
Some people, like journalist Alberto Di Majo, thought the protest was a good thing. Others wondered if a non-profit group from the United States should try to change laws in Italy.

The body text reads, "The Italian Wikipedia welcomes and expresses its solidarity with the protests of its colleagues on the English Wikipedia against the Stop Online Piracy act and the PROTECT IP Act. These bills, if approved by the U.S. Congress, would limit the freedom of the web and the very survival of Wikipedia."
