Life of a Mayan King
Early Life and Family
Itzamnaaj Kʼawiil was the son of King Bʼalaj Chan Kʼawiil and Lady of Itzan. Records suggest he was born around January 25, 673. Some historians think this date might be slightly off. It could be because he was born during a time of war, away from his home city.
He became king after his brother, Itzamnaaj Bʼalam. He also had a sister named Wak Chanil Ajaw. His nephew was Kʼakʼ Tiliw Chan Chaak, another important figure in Mayan history.
His Time as Ruler
Itzamnaaj Kʼawiil ruled Dos Pilas from March 24, 698, until his death. His reign ended on October 22, 726. During his rule, he took part in at least one special journey or 'ritual circuit'. These journeys were important for Mayan kings.
After Itzamnaaj Kʼawiil, Uchaʼan Kʼin Bʼalam became the next ruler. It is believed that Kʼawiil Chan Kʼinich might have been Itzamnaaj Kʼawiil's son.
