Ivan Matveyevich Kapitanets (born January 10, 1928 – died September 25, 2018) was a very important naval leader. He was a Fleet Admiral in the Soviet Navy. This means he was one of the highest-ranking officers in the Soviet Union's navy.

Kapitanets joined the Navy in 1946. He studied at the Caspian Higher Naval School. He finished his studies in 1950. After graduating, he started his career in the Northern Fleet. He worked as a torpedo officer on a destroyer ship called Okrylenny.

Becoming a Naval Commander

In 1958, Kapitanets completed special training for officers. After this, he became the commander of two destroyers. These ships were named Ostry and Otryvisty. They were also part of the Northern Fleet.

He continued his education at the Naval Academy. He graduated from there in 1961. After that, he was put in charge of a group of destroyers. This group was also part of the Northern Fleet.

Leading Fleets and Squadrons

Kapitanets studied even more at the General Staff Academy. He finished this training in 1970. From 1970 to 1973, he was a deputy commander. He helped lead the 5th Operational Squadron. This was a Soviet naval group in the Mediterranean Sea.

In 1973, Kapitanets moved to the Pacific Fleet. There, he commanded the Kamchatka Flotilla. A flotilla is a small fleet of ships. He was promoted to vice admiral in 1975.

In 1978, he became a deputy commander of the Baltic Fleet. From 1981 to 1985, he was the main commander of this fleet. After that, he was promoted again. He became the commander of the Northern Fleet.

Highest Rank and Retirement

In 1988, Ivan Kapitanets reached his highest rank. He became the first deputy commander of the entire Soviet Navy. At this time, he was also made a Fleet Admiral. This is a very high honor. He retired from the Navy in 1992.

After retiring, Kapitanets continued to help his country. He advised the Russian Government on naval matters. He was also a member of the Academy of Military Sciences. He wrote several books about the history of the Russian navy.
