Ivan Ivanovich Okhlobystin (Russian: Ива́н Ива́нович Охлобы́стин; born 22 July 1966) is a well-known Russian actor, director, and screenwriter. He was also an Orthodox priest for some time. However, he was later told he could no longer perform priestly duties. This happened because some of the roles he played in movies were seen as not suitable for a priest. He is currently the creative director for a company called Baon.

Early Life and Education

Ivan Ivanovich Okhlobystin was born on July 22, 1966. His birthplace was a recreation center called "Polenovo" in the Tula Oblast region of Russia. His father, also named Ivan Ivanovich Okhlobystin, was a military doctor. He had fought in World War II. At the time of Ivan's birth, his father was 62 years old. He worked as the head doctor at Polenovo.

Ivan's mother, Albina Ivanovna Stavitskaya, was an engineer-economist. She was 19 years old when Ivan was born. Later, his mother remarried, and Ivan gained a brother named Stanislav Stavitsky. The family lived in a village near Maloyaroslavets for a while. After that, they all moved to the city of Moscow.

After finishing school, Ivan went to VGIK, a famous film school. He studied directing there. Many future stars of Russian cinema were in his class. These included Fyodor Bondarchuk and Tigran Keosayan. Other talented people like Renata Litvinova studied on a different course. Ivan stayed friends and worked with many of them later on.

He was drafted into the army before he could finish his studies. He served in the rocket forces near Rostov-on-Don. After his army service, he returned to VGIK. He became very involved in student activities. In 1992, he graduated from the directing department.

Starting in the 1990s

Ivan Okhlobystin's acting career began with the film "The Leg" in 1991. He even won an award for best actor at a festival called "Molodost-1991." For this film, he used a different name, Ivan Chuzhoy. His first movie as a director was "Arbiter." This film won an award at the Kinotavr festival.

At the same time, Ivan also worked in theater. In 1996, a play he wrote, "The Villain, or Cry of the Dolphin," was performed. It premiered at the Moscow Art Theater. Another play he wrote, "Maximilian the Stylite," was also staged there. In 1999, this play was made into a movie called "Maximilian." In the late 1990s, Ivan wrote for magazines.

His film work continued in 2000 with the popular movie Demobbed. Ivan helped write the script for this film. The story was partly based on his own experiences serving in the army.

Public Life and Views

Ivan Okhlobystin became very popular in the late 1990s. After this, he decided to join a monastery and became a Russian Orthodox priest. However, in 2010, the head of the Russian Orthodox Church, Patriarch Kirill, decided that Ivan could no longer serve as a priest. This meant he was not allowed to wear priestly clothes or the cross. After this, Ivan returned to his acting and entertainment career. Later that year, he became the creative director for Euroset, a large phone retailer in Russia.

In 2011, Ivan announced that he wanted to run for President of Russia. He planned to do this in the 2012 elections. However, he later changed his mind. He said he did so because of the opinion of the Russian Orthodox Church.

In 2014, a public event with Okhlobystin in the Ukrainian city of Kharkiv was canceled. This was due to some statements he had made. In November 2014, Okhlobystin visited Donetsk. He stated his support for the region. He is not allowed to enter Ukraine. He is also banned from entering Latvia and Estonia. Because of this, all films and TV shows he is in are banned in Ukraine. In June 2024, the European Union placed sanctions on Okhlobystin.

Personal Life

Ivan Okhlobystin has been married since 1995. His wife is actress Oksana Okhlobystina, whose maiden name was Arbuzova. They have six children together.
