Early Life and Education
Ivar Colquhoun was born in 1916. His father was Sir Iain Colquhoun, the 7th Baronet. Ivar went to a famous school called Eton College.
Military Service in World War II
When World War II began, Ivar was working in a lumber camp in Finland. He joined the British Army as a soldier. He was part of the Argyll and Sutherland Highlanders.
Later, he joined a special ski battalion when the Soviet Union invaded Finland. After that, he became an officer in the Royal Artillery. He served in Libya during the siege of Tobruk, an important battle. He also served with the Grenadier Guards and the Coldstream Guards.
Public Service and Leadership
After the war, Sir Ivar continued to serve his community. For over 20 years, he was a Justice of the Peace. This meant he helped with local legal matters.
He was also a deputy lieutenant for Dunbartonshire, a region in Scotland. For two decades, he led the British Sailors' Society, an organization that helps sailors.
Scottish Titles and Clan Role
Sir Ivar held important Scottish titles. He was the 8th Baronet and the 30th Laird of Luss. These titles meant he was a leader of the Colquhoun clan.
He was part of the Standing Council of Scottish Chiefs. This group helps preserve Scottish traditions. He often attended clan gatherings and games. From 1949 to 1982, he was the chieftain of the Luss Highland Games.
Family Life
In 1943, Sir Ivar married Kathleen Nimmo Duncan. They had three children together:
- Torquhil Colquhoun (born 1944, died 1963)
- Iona Mary (born 1945), who later became the Dowager Duchess of Argyll. She married the 12th Duke of Argyll.
- Malcolm Rory Colquhoun (born 1947), who became the 9th Baronet after his elder brother passed away.
