Career Path
Head of the National Library
Before she became a politician, Ivi Eenmaa was in charge of the Estonian National Library. She held this important job from 1993 to 1997. The national library is the main library of a country, responsible for collecting and preserving all the books and publications from that nation.
A Move into Politics
In 1997, Ivi Eenmaa decided to enter politics. She joined a political group called the Estonian Coalition Party.
First Woman Mayor of Tallinn
Soon after entering politics, Ivi Eenmaa achieved a major milestone. From May 1997 to March 1999, she served as the mayor of Tallinn. This was a historic moment because she was the first woman ever to hold this position. To this day, she remains the only woman to have been the mayor of Estonia's capital city.
Later Roles in Government
After her time as mayor of Tallinn, Ivi Eenmaa continued her work in public service. She later joined the Estonian Reform Party.
In 2005, she became the mayor of another Estonian town, Võru. Two years later, in 2007, she was elected to the Riigikogu, which is the name for the parliament of Estonia. The Riigikogu is where laws for the entire country are made. After being elected, she left her position as mayor of Võru to serve in the national government.
