Ivonne Passada Leoncini (born April 4, 1956 – died March 11, 2023) was an important Uruguayan professor and politician. She was a member of a political group called the Broad Front. From 2015 until her death, she served as a senator, which is like a national lawmaker. She took this role after Eduardo Bonomi became the Minister of the Interior.

About Ivonne Passada's Life

Ivonne Passada was born in Montevideo, Uruguay, on April 4, 1956. She went to Colegio Clara Jackson de Heber for her early schooling. Later, she studied at the University of the Republic. She focused on sociology and also took courses in industrial safety.

From 1984 to 2004, Ivonne Passada worked as a professor at the Universidad del Trabajo del Uruguay (UTU). She taught industrial safety during these years.

Ivonne Passada's Political Career

Ivonne Passada was very active in her community. She worked with local neighborhood groups in the Malvín Norte area.

Early Political Involvement

Starting in 1984, she helped rebuild education unions and the PIT-CNT, which is a major workers' union group in Uruguay. She was a leader in the Association of UTU Officials (AFUTU) from 1985 to 2002. From 2002 to 2004, she was also a coordinator for the PIT-CNT.

In 1985, Passada joined the Tupamaros National Liberation Movement. In 2002, she became part of the National Directorate of the Movement of Popular Participation (MPP). This is a political group within the larger Broad Front party.

Serving in Government

In the national elections of 2004, Ivonne Passada was chosen as an alternate deputy. She officially became a deputy on March 1, 2005. This happened when Eduardo Bonomi, whom she was substituting for, became the head of the Ministry of Labor and Social Affairs.

As a deputy, she worked on important committees. These included the Labor Legislation Commission and the Special Commission on Gender and Equity. She became vice president of the Labor Legislation Commission in 2006 and its president in 2007.

In the elections of October 2009, Passada led the MPP list of deputies for Montevideo. On February 15, 2010, she became the president of the Chamber of Representatives. This is a very important leadership role in the government.

Later Roles and Senatorial Term

In June 2012, Ivonne Passada was elected as one of the three vice presidents of the Broad Front party. This showed her growing importance within the party.

In October 2012, she was chosen to be the vice president of the Inter-Parliamentary Union. This is an international organization for parliaments around the world. She was elected unanimously for this role.

In the national elections of October 2014, Passada was re-elected as a deputy for Montevideo. She also joined the list for the Senate as the first substitute for Eduardo Bonomi. When President Tabaré Vázquez confirmed Bonomi as Minister of the Interior, Ivonne Passada officially became a Senator of the Republic. She served in this role until her passing.

Ivonne Passada passed away on March 11, 2023, at 66 years old.
