The Story of the Iyo Stone
How the Garden Began
The Japanese Garden Society of Oregon held its first official meeting on January 15, 1963. At this meeting, Philip Englehart was chosen as the society's first president. A president is like a leader or chairperson for a group.
Englehart's Important Role
During his time as president, Englehart worked very hard. He helped find and get important materials for the garden. He even traveled all the way to Japan! His trips helped bring real, traditional Japanese items to the garden. This made the Portland Japanese Garden truly authentic.
Adding the Iyo Stone
