Jógvan Isaksen (born August 25, 1950, in Tórshavn) is a well-known writer and expert on literature from the Faroe Islands. He is famous for his exciting crime novels and his books about Faroese literature. One of his important works is Færøsk Litteratur (Faroese Literature), published in 1993. He also leads the oldest Faroese publishing house, Mentunargrunnur Studentafelagsins, which helps publish many Faroese books. This publishing house was founded in 1910.

About Jógvan Isaksen

Jógvan Isaksen was born in Tórshavn, the capital of the Faroe Islands. His parents, Magnhild and Reimar Isaksen, came from the village of Gøta.

His Studies and Work

After finishing high school in 1970, Jógvan moved to Denmark. He studied Nordic Philology at Aarhus University. This means he learned a lot about the languages and literature of the Nordic countries. He earned his master's degree in Scandinavian Literature Science in 1982.

Since 1986, Jógvan Isaksen has been a professor at the University of Copenhagen. He teaches about the Faroese language and Faroese literature. Since 2000, he has also been the main editor of the magazine Nordisk litteratur (Nordic Literature). This magazine is put out by the Nordic Council.

His Books and Awards

Jógvan Isaksen started writing in 1978. His crime novels are very popular in the Faroe Islands. They often become bestsellers, especially around Christmas time. Some of his books have even been translated into other languages.

He has also written books for children. In addition, he has written many books about other Faroese writers and their literature.

Jógvan Isaksen has received several important awards for his work.

  • In 1994, he won the Faroese Literature Prize. He received it for his work about the Faroese writer Hanus Kamban and for his efforts in Faroese Literature.
  • In 2006, he received the Heiðursgáva landsins. This is one of the Faroese Government's special awards.

His crime novel Blíð er summarnátt á Føroyalandi was very important. It was one of the first crime novels written in Faroese where the story takes place in the Faroe Islands. This book has been translated into Danish, Icelandic, and German.

Awards and Recognition

  • 1994: Faroese Literature Prize (Bókmentavirðisløn M.A. Jacobsens) for his non-fiction work.
  • 2006: Faroese Cultural Prize (Heiðursgáva landsins), which included DKK 75,000.
  • 2011: Faroese Literature Prize (Bókmentavirðisløn M.A.Jacobsens) for his great work at the Faroese publishing house Mentunargrunnur Studentafelagsins. This award recognized his efforts in publishing Faroese books.
