Jürgen Ligi (born on 16 July 1959) is an important Estonian politician. He has held many high-level jobs in the Estonian government. He is a member and a vice-chairman of the Reform Party, which is a liberal political party.
Mr. Ligi has served as the Minister of Foreign Affairs. He was also the Minister of Education and Research from 2015 to 2016. Before that, he was the Minister of Defence from 2005 to 2007. He also worked as the Minister of Finance from 2009 to 2014.

Early Life and Education
Jürgen Ligi was born in Tartu, Estonia. After finishing school at Tartu Second Gymnasium in 1977, he went to the University of Tartu. There, he studied geography and foreign economics. He also studied at the Estonian Business School.
Before becoming a full-time politician, Mr. Ligi worked in different roles. He was the head of a bank branch in Kuressaare. He also worked as an economic advisor and business consultant for the local government in Kaarma Parish. He was also involved with the Estonian Chamber of Commerce and Industry.
Political Career
Jürgen Ligi has had a long and active career in Estonian politics. He has been a member of the Estonian Parliament and held several important minister positions.
Member of Parliament
The Riigikogu is the parliament of Estonia, where laws are made. Jürgen Ligi was a member of the Riigikogu for many years. He served as a Member of Parliament from 1995 to 2005. He was also a member from 2007 to 2009, and again from 2014 to 2015.
Minister of Defence
From 2005 to 2007, Jürgen Ligi served as the Minister of Defence. In this role, he was responsible for Estonia's military and national security.
Minister of Finance
On 3 June 2009, Jürgen Ligi became the Minister of Finance. He was responsible for the country's money matters, like the national budget and taxes. He held this position until November 2014. During his time as Finance Minister, a disagreement arose with another minister. This led to him stepping down from his role.
Minister of Education and Research
On 9 April 2015, Mr. Ligi took on a new role as the Minister of Education and Research. He worked in this position in Prime Minister Taavi Rõivas's government. His job was to oversee schools, universities, and scientific research in Estonia. He served in this role until September 2016.
Minister of Foreign Affairs
On 12 September 2016, Jürgen Ligi was chosen to be the Minister of Foreign Affairs. This happened after the previous minister decided to run for president. As Foreign Minister, he represented Estonia in its relationships with other countries around the world.
Personal Life
Jürgen Ligi comes from a family with a strong connection to history and culture. His father, Herbert Ligi, was an archaeologist. His mother, Reet, was the daughter of another famous archaeologist, Harri Moora.
Jürgen Ligi's brother, Priit Ligi, was also an archaeologist. Sadly, Priit died when the cruise ferry MS Estonia sank in 1994. Jürgen's sister, Katre, is married to the well-known poet Hando Runnel. Jürgen Ligi is also related to the poet Juhan Viiding and the politician Indrek Tarand.
Jürgen Ligi is married and has two sons.
