Jürgen Ligi (born 16 July 1959) is an Estonian politician. He is a member and vice-chairman of the Reform Party, which is a liberal political group. He has held many important jobs in the Estonian government.
Since 23 July 2024, Jürgen Ligi has been the Minister of Finance. Before this, he was the Minister of Foreign Affairs and the Minister of Education and Research. He also served as the Minister of Defence.

Early Life and Education
Jürgen Ligi was born in Tartu, Estonia. After finishing high school at Tartu Second Gymnasium in 1977, he went to the University of Tartu. There, he studied geography and foreign economics. He also studied at the Estonian Business School.
Before becoming a full-time politician, Ligi worked in different roles. He was involved in banking and business consulting. He also worked for the Estonian Chamber of Commerce and Industry.
Political Career
Jürgen Ligi has had a long and active career in Estonian politics. He has been a member of parliament and held several important minister positions.
Member of Parliament
Ligi was a member of the Riigikogu, which is the Estonian parliament. He served in the Riigikogu for several periods: from 1995 to 2005, from 2007 to 2009, and again from 2014 to 2015.
Minister of Defence
From 2005 to 2007, Jürgen Ligi served as the Minister of Defence. In this role, he was responsible for Estonia's military and national security.
Minister of Finance
On 3 June 2009, Ligi became the Minister of Finance. He held this position until 3 November 2014. As Minister of Finance, he managed the country's money and economy. In October 2014, a comment he made caused a stir. This led to pressure for him to step down from his role.
Minister of Education and Research
On 9 April 2015, Jürgen Ligi took on a new role. He became the Minister of Education and Research. He served in this cabinet led by Taavi Rõivas until 12 September 2016. In this job, he oversaw schools, universities, and scientific studies in Estonia.
Minister of Foreign Affairs
On 12 September 2016, Ligi was chosen to be the Minister of Foreign Affairs. He took over this role after the previous minister, Marina Kaljurand, decided to run for president. He served as Foreign Minister until 23 November 2016.
Current Role as Minister of Finance
Jürgen Ligi returned to the role of Minister of Finance on 23 July 2024. He is currently serving in this position under Prime Minister Kristen Michal.
Family Life
Jürgen Ligi comes from a family with a strong connection to history and culture. His father, Herbert Ligi, was an archaeologist. His mother, Reet, was the daughter of another famous archaeologist, Harri Moora.
Jürgen's brother, Priit Ligi, was also an archaeologist. Sadly, Priit died when the cruise ferry MS Estonia sank in 1994. Jürgen's sister, Katre, is married to the well-known poet Hando Runnel. He is also related to poet Juhan Viiding and politician Indrek Tarand. Jürgen Ligi is married and has two sons.
