Jüri Järvet (born June 18, 1919 – died July 5, 1995) was a famous Estonian actor. His original name was Georgi Kuznetsov. He changed it to the Estonian form, Jüri Järvet, in 1938. Sometimes, you might see his name written as Yuri Yevgenyevich Yarvet, but this is an incorrect way to write his name in English from Russian.
His Life and Acting Career
Jüri Järvet was born in Tallinn, Estonia. He became a very well-known actor. He starred in many films, both in Russian and his native Estonian language.
One of his most famous roles in the Western world was Dr. Snaut. He played this character in Andrei Tarkovsky's science fiction film Solaris (1972). This movie is about a space mission to a mysterious planet.
Järvet also played the main character in King Lear (1971). This film was based on William Shakespeare's famous play. It was filmed in the beautiful, often stark, landscapes of Estonia. The director was Grigori Kozintsev, and the music was composed by Dmitri Shostakovich.
Jüri Järvet received important awards for his acting. In 1975, he was given the title of People's Artist of the USSR. This was a very high honor for artists in the Soviet Union. He also won the USSR State Prize in 1981, which recognized his great achievements in arts and science.
His son, Jüri Järvet Jr., also followed in his father's footsteps. He has acted in several movies, too. Some of these include All My Lenins and Khrustalyov, My Car!.
