The J. B. Evans House is a historic home in Delray Beach, Florida. Today, it is known as the Sandoway Discovery Center. The house is an important landmark because it still looks much like it did when it was first built. It is located at 142 South Ocean Boulevard, right by the coast.

History of the J. B. Evans House

The J. B. Evans House was built in 1936 as a home for a family to use during the winter season. It was constructed in a style known locally as Resort Colonial Style. This style was popular for vacation homes in the area.

A Special Style of Building

The house is a two-story building made of wood. It has a unique and interesting layout inside. The builders used different materials for each floor.

  • The first floor is covered with horizontal wooden boards that overlap, called clapboard.
  • The second floor has vertical boards with narrow strips covering the joints, a style called board and batten.

The roof is low with many different angles and is covered in shingles. A brick chimney stands in the center. The windows have a classic look, with six small panes of glass in both the top and bottom sections. They are protected by shutters with slats that can be opened and closed.

Becoming a Historic Landmark

Because of its special architecture and history, the J. B. Evans House was added to the U.S. National Register of Historic Places on March 28, 2002. This is a list of places that are important to the country's history and should be preserved.

Sandoway Discovery Center Today

Today, the historic house is home to the Sandoway Discovery Center. It is a fun and educational place where you can learn about the ocean and the animals that live along the coast.

What Can You See Inside?

The center has many exciting exhibits for visitors. You can see:

  • A large collection of shells from all over the world.
  • A coral reef aquarium with sharks and other fish.
  • Live reptiles, including both native species and invasive ones (species that don't belong in Florida).
  • Gardens with native Florida plants.

The Sandoway Discovery Center also offers classes and programs to teach people about the environment and how to protect it.
