Who Was James De Bow?

His Early Life

James D. B. De Bow was born on July 20, 1820. He grew up in Charleston, South Carolina. He was the second son of Mary Bridget Norton and Garret De Bow. His father, Garret, was born in New York City. His mother, Mary Bridget, came from an important family in South Carolina. Her family had lived on the Carolina Coast for a long time.

His Magazine and Ideas

De Bow lived in New Orleans. He used his magazine, De Bow's Review, to share his ideas. He wanted to help the Southern economy grow stronger. He believed the South should expand its agriculture and commerce. This would help the Southern economy become more independent. He often warned that the South was too dependent on the North. He felt the South was like a "colony" to the North. This meant the South was at a big disadvantage.

Later Life

In 1866, James De Bow became the first president of a new railroad project. This was the proposed Tennessee and Pacific Railroad. However, he did not live long enough to see it finished. Less than a year later, De Bow passed away. He died on February 27, 1867, from an illness called peritonitis. He became sick during a trip to visit his brother in New Jersey.]
