Early Life and Education
J. Fred Duckett was born in Houston, Texas. He grew up there and went to Lamar High School.
After high school, he attended Rice University in the 1950s. He studied history and earned his bachelor's degree. While at Rice, he played football and ran track. An injury during his junior year led him to work with the sports information director, which was a great start to his career in sports.
After graduating from Rice in 1955, he continued his studies. He went to the University of Texas for his master's degree. He even spent a year studying in the Netherlands as a Fulbright scholar. This scholarship helps students study abroad.
A Voice for Sports
J. Fred Duckett became famous for his voice. In 1962, he became the public address (PA) announcer for the Houston Astros, a professional baseball team. He also announced many sports events for Rice University.
He was known for his special way of announcing players. For example, he would draw out the name "Jose Cruuuuuuz!" when the player came up to bat. Jose Cruz himself said that Duckett was the one who came up with that famous way of saying his name. Duckett once shared that people would often tell him, "I've heard that voice. I just don't know where." He worked with the Astros until 1992.
Involvement in Track and Field
Beyond announcing, Duckett was very active in Track and Field. He worked as an official, a coach, and an announcer for many events. He even worked with the U.S. Olympic Committee for three Olympic Games: in 1976, 1984, and 1988. He also helped organize the U.S. Olympic festival when it was held in Houston.
Teaching Career
After finishing his graduate studies, Duckett taught at St. John's School in Houston. However, he found it hard to make a living from teaching alone, so he became an insurance salesman for a while.
Later, he found a part-time history teaching job at the Awty International School. He loved teaching and stayed there for 17 years, right up until his death.
Family Life
J. Fred Duckett was married to Baudine W. Duckett. She had a daughter named Petra Cochran from a previous marriage, and Duckett adopted her.
Later Years and Legacy
Sadly, J. Fred Duckett began missing classes because he was battling leukemia, a type of cancer. In June 2007, he passed away in Houston at the age of 74.
His wife, Baudine, had passed away earlier that same year in January 2007.
After his death, a moment of silence was held for him at the Grand Opening of the new athletics facility at Awty International School. This was to honor his many years as a track coach at the school.
J. Fred Duckett is remembered for his distinctive voice, his passion for sports, and his dedication to teaching.
