James King Annand, also known as J. K. Annand, was a Scottish poet. He is best known for writing many wonderful poems especially for children. He was also a teacher and worked hard to promote the Scots language.

About J. K. Annand

James King Annand was born in Edinburgh, Scotland, on February 2, 1908. His parents were Maggie Gold and William Annand. He went to Broughton Secondary School in Edinburgh. Later, he studied at the University of Edinburgh and finished his degree in 1930.

After university, Annand became a teacher. He taught at schools in Edinburgh and Whithorn. Besides writing his own poems, he also translated stories and poems. He changed works from German and old Latin into the Scots language. This included old Bavarian folk songs and parts of Carmina Burana.

His Work with Scots Language

J. K. Annand was very passionate about the Scots language. He helped start a magazine called Lallans. This magazine was a place for writers to publish their work in Scots. Annand was the editor of Lallans from 1973 to 1983.

His poem 'Arctic Convoy' won a special award in 1956. It was named the Best Original Poem in the Scottish Dialect by the Burns Federation. This showed how important his work was for Scottish poetry.

  • After he passed away, he was given an MBE in 1993. This award was for his services to the Scots Language and Literature.
  • In 2008, a special stone was placed in Makars' Court to remember him. Makars' Court celebrates famous Scottish writers.
  • In 2015, he received the Arctic Star award. This was for his service in the Royal Navy during World War II.

J. K. Annand passed away in Edinburgh in 1993. His poems continue to be enjoyed by many, especially young readers.
