JRDN's Early Life
JRDN was born in Halifax, Nova Scotia. When he was a baby, his family moved to Toronto, Ontario. He lived in Toronto until he was 10 years old. Then, his family moved back to Nova Scotia.
While in Toronto, JRDN lived in the same building as King Lou. King Lou was a member of the music group Dream Warriors. King Lou helped JRDN learn about hip hop music and culture. Later, JRDN went to St. Francis Xavier University. He played basketball there. After college, he played basketball professionally in France for one year.
JRDN's Music Career
JRDN started his music journey by competing on Canadian Idol. This show helped him perform with other Canadian artists. It also gave him a chance to be seen on television. He worked with a producer named Trobiz in Halifax. He also recorded music with groups called N.E.P and Triple Threat.
In 2007, JRDN began working with producer Classified. Classified helped JRDN create his first album, No Dress Code.
No Dress Code Album
No Dress Code was released in 2007. It had 13 songs. Some popular songs from this album were "Selfish Times" and "Feelin’ Fine". The album helped JRDN win the CBC Galaxie Rising Star prize. This was at the 2007 African Nova Scotian Music Awards. He was also nominated for an award at the 2008 East Coast Music Awards.
JRDN toured across Canada with Classified and Maestro. He also opened shows for famous artists like Ne-Yo, Snoop Dogg, and Rihanna.
Breakthrough Success with IAMJRDN
Around 2010, Ralph Jordon Croucher started using the shorter name JRDN. He began working with Kuya Productions in Toronto. He also worked with the songwriting team Sammy Blues and Bobby Brass. These producers had worked with many big names in music. JRDN signed with Kuya Productions in 2009.
His official first album, IAMJRDN, came out on November 9, 2010. This album reached number 13 on the Canadian R&B Albums Chart. The first song from the album, "U Can Have It All", became very popular. It reached number 20 on the Canadian Hot 100 music chart. Its music video was also very popular.
Another song from the album, "Like Magic", reached number 24 on the Canadian Hot 100. Its music video was also a big hit. "Like Magic" was certified Gold by Music Canada in 2012. This means it sold many copies. JRDN also worked as a Youth Ambassador for D250. He was part of the Citizen Voices program too.
