Early Life and Education
Ja'Mal Green was born in 1995. He grew up in different neighborhoods in Chicago, including Englewood, Gresham, and Beverly. He went to Wendell Phillips Academy High School.
Career and Activism
Green has said he worked for the Bernie Sanders 2016 presidential campaign in 2016. That same year, he was arrested with 19 other people at the Taste of Chicago. They were protesting against police actions.
In 2018, Green helped start Majostee Allstars. This group aimed to guide and train young people who faced challenges. The company later closed in 2024.
Running for Mayor
Green ran for mayor of Chicago in the 2019 Chicago mayoral election. He decided to stop his campaign on January 1, 2019. He felt he did not have enough money to continue. Green received a few "write-in" votes. He later supported Lori Lightfoot in the final election round.
He ran for mayor again in June 2022. His main goals included making the city safer and improving the government. He also wanted to help the economy and fight climate change. Green was listed first on the ballot for the 2023 Chicago mayoral election. In the first round of voting, he placed sixth out of nine candidates. He received 12,239 votes. After this, Green supported Paul Vallas in the final election.
Community Work
During the COVID-19 pandemic, Green started a business called Mobile Nail Salon. He also created Majostee Spa.
In June 2020, Green and other activists protested against Chase Bank. They wanted the bank to follow the Community Reinvestment Act. This act helps make sure banks lend money fairly in all neighborhoods. A report showed that Chase Bank gave very few loans to Black-majority neighborhoods. Because of his protests, Green was not allowed to enter Chase Bank branches.
In July 2020, Green and David Doig started The Small Business Repair Program. This program helped Black-owned businesses that were damaged during protests.
Green also founded My Turn to Own in 2021. This was a nonprofit group that helped people buy homes. This group closed in April 2024.
Green gained attention for his activism in the Laquan McDonald case. In February 2022, he was arrested again. This happened during a protest asking for the arrest of a former Chicago police officer in that case.
