Jaan Eilart (born June 24, 1933 – died May 18, 2006) was an important Estonian person who loved nature. He studied plants and how landscapes change. Most importantly, he worked hard to protect nature and its history.

He was born in a place called Pala in Järva County, Estonia.

Teaching and Inspiring Others

In 1957, Jaan Eilart started teaching about nature protection. He taught this subject at the University of Tartu. He wanted to share his passion and knowledge with young people.

Starting Nature Groups

Eilart didn't just teach; he also created groups to help people get involved.

  • In 1958, he started the Tartu Students' Nature Protection Circle. This was a group for university students who wanted to protect nature. Many people think it was the oldest student group in the world focused on saving nature!
  • Later, in 1966, he also founded the Estonian Nature Conservation Society. This group helped protect nature all over Estonia.

Creating National Parks

One of Jaan Eilart's biggest achievements was helping to create Lahemaa National Park.
