Jaap ter Haar (born March 25, 1922 – died February 26, 1998) was a famous Dutch writer. He wrote many exciting books especially for children. His stories were loved by many young readers in the Netherlands and beyond.

His Early Career

Jaap ter Haar first worked at Radio Netherlands Worldwide. While working there, he also created many radio plays. These plays were for a broadcaster called NCRV. His radio stories often featured two characters named Saskia and Jeroen. Later, these popular radio stories were turned into a series of books.

In 1952, Jaap ter Haar decided to become a full-time writer. This happened because his job at Radio Netherlands Worldwide no longer allowed employees to earn money from other work. He needed to write many books to support himself and his family.

Famous Books and Characters

Jaap ter Haar wrote many different book series. Besides Saskia and Jeroen, he created other beloved characters. These included Lotje, Eelke, and Ernstjan and Schnabbeltje. His books were very popular with children.

Many talented artists helped bring his stories to life. These illustrators included Gerard van Straaten, Charlotte Dematons, and Rein van Looy. Other artists like Rien Poortvliet and Otto Dicke also illustrated his books.

Awards He Won

Jaap ter Haar won several important awards for his writing. In 1972, he received the Nienke van Hichtum-prijs. He won this award for his book Geschiedenis van de Lage Landen.

Two years later, in 1974, he won the Gouden Griffel award. This was for his book Het wereldje van Beer Ligthart. This book was so good that it was translated into German. The German version was called Behalt das Leben lieb. In 1976, he won the Buxtehude Bull award for this German translation.

His Later Life

Jaap ter Haar passed away in February 1998. He left behind a wonderful collection of children's books that continue to be enjoyed by new generations of readers.
