The Jabez Partridge Homestead is a very old and important farm house. You can find it at 81 Partridge Road in Gardner, Massachusetts. The oldest part of this house was built around 1772. This makes it one of the oldest buildings in the whole town! An early settler named Jabez Partridge built it. The homestead is a great example of the Federal period style of architecture. Because of its history, it was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1979.

About the Jabez Partridge Homestead

The Jabez Partridge Homestead is located in a country area. It sits on the east side of Partridge Road in southern Gardner.

What Does It Look Like?

The main part of the house is two and a half stories tall. It is made of wood and has a pointy roof. The outside walls are covered with overlapping wooden boards called clapboards. A big chimney stands in the middle of the house.

The front of the house has five window openings. They are placed evenly around the front door. The front door has tall, thin columns on each side. Above the door, there is a small window and a decorative frame.

Behind the main part of the house is an older, smaller building. It is one and a half stories tall and also made of wood. Across the street, you can see a barn and a dairy shed.

A Look Back in Time

The oldest part of the house, which is the back section, was built before 1786. Most people believe it was built in 1772. Jabez Partridge, one of the first people to settle in this area, built the house.

Jabez Partridge was very involved in town matters. He even signed a paper in 1785 asking for the town to become official. The property stayed in the Partridge family for a very long time. It was passed down through his family until 1927. Since then, the Anderson family has owned the homestead.

There is also a small building on the property. People think it is an old outhouse from that time period. The land around the house has always been used for farming.
