Jacinto Benavente y Martínez (born August 12, 1866 – died July 14, 1954) was a very important Spanish writer. He was known for writing many plays. He won the Nobel Prize for Literature in 1922. This award was given to him for how well he continued the great traditions of Spanish drama. He made plays more realistic and focused on how people behave in society.

The Life of Jacinto Benavente

Jacinto Benavente was born in Madrid, Spain. His father was a famous children's doctor. Jacinto wanted to make plays more like real life. He changed how plays were written. Instead of grand speeches, he used everyday conversations. He also changed plays from being very dramatic to being more like comedies.

How Benavente Changed Spanish Plays

Benavente focused on showing real experiences in his plays. He moved away from old, predictable stories. He made characters think and talk more, instead of just acting on sudden feelings. He was interested in beauty and what is right and wrong in life.

He was a liberal monarchist. This means he supported a king or queen but also believed in individual freedoms. He was not a fan of socialism. Later in his life, he supported Francoist Spain. He saw this as the only choice after a difficult time in Spain's history between 1931 and 1936.

Jacinto Benavente passed away in Aldeaencabo de Escalona, which is in the Toledo region of Spain. He was 87 years old. He never got married.
