Sir Jack Martin Cuzick (born 11 August 1948) is an American-born British scientist. He is a leader in the field of Epidemiology, which is the study of how diseases spread and how to prevent them.

Sir Jack is the director of the Wolfson Institute of Preventive Medicine in London. He also leads the Centre for Cancer Prevention. He holds the title of John Snow Professor of Epidemiology at Queen Mary University of London.

Early Life and Education

Jack Cuzick was born in Hawthorne, California, in the United States. He went to El Segundo High School.

He studied mathematics and physics at Harvey Mudd College, earning a Bachelor of Science degree in 1970. Later, he received his doctorate degree in mathematics from Claremont Graduate University in 1974.

Research and Career in Science

In the late 1970s, Sir Jack worked in New York City at Columbia University. There, he focused on using math to analyze how well medical studies, called clinical trials, worked.

In 1978, he moved to Oxford University in the UK. He joined Richard Doll, a famous scientist who studied cancer. Sir Jack's work involves collecting and studying information to help prevent cancer and find it early.

Preventing Cancer

Sir Jack is well-known for his important work in preventing cancers. He has focused especially on breast cancer, cervical cancer, and bowel cancer.

He led major studies called the IBIS trials. These trials looked at medicines like tamoxifen and aromatase inhibitors. These medicines can help prevent breast cancer in women who have a high chance of getting the disease. This type of prevention is called chemoprevention.

For this important research, Sir Jack's team received a special award. They won the Translational Cancer Research Prize from Cancer Research UK in 2014.

Awards and Honours

Sir Jack Cuzick has received many important awards for his contributions to science:

  • In 2025, he was made a Knight by the King in the New Year Honours list. This means he can use the title "Sir."
  • In 2017, he received the Cancer Research UK Lifetime Achievement in Cancer Research Prize.
  • In 2016, he was chosen as a Fellow of the Royal Society. This is a very high honour for scientists.
  • In 2015, he received the Medal of Honor from the American Cancer Society.
  • In 2014, his team won the Cancer Research UK Translational Cancer Research Team Prize.
  • In 2003, he became a Fellow of the Academy of Medical Sciences.
  • He was also appointed Commander of the Order of the British Empire (CBE) in 2017. This was for his great work in preventing cancer and finding it early.
