Contents
Playing Rugby League
Jack Danzey started his top-level football career with the Newtown team in 1960. He played seven games for them. The next year, he moved to play for Narrandera.
Playing for Balmain
In 1962, Danzey joined the Balmain Tigers. He played in the 1964 grand final (the championship game) but his team lost to St. George. In 1965, he was the captain of the Balmain reserve grade team, and they won their competition.
Playing for Cronulla-Sutherland
Danzey finished his playing career with the Cronulla-Sutherland team. He played for them in 1967 and 1968. Many people thought he played some of his best games during this time.
Refereeing Career
After his playing days, Jack Danzey became a rugby league referee. He started by refereeing junior games in the Newtown area.
Becoming a Top Referee
He soon became a referee for the New South Wales Rugby League (NSWRL). His first top-level game as a referee was in 1973. He went on to control more than 170 top-grade matches. His refereeing career lasted until 1983.
Danzey was often considered one of the best referees. He officiated many important games. These included the City vs Country match in 1978 and 1982. He also refereed New South Wales vs Queensland games in 1978 and 1980. He was a referee for semi-final games in 1977, 1978, 1980, and 1982.
Grand Final Incident
Even though he was a top referee, he never refereed an end-of-season grand final. However, he did help out in the 1977 grand final replay. A touch judge (an official who helps the referee) was hurt during the game. Danzey, who had refereed an earlier game that day, stepped in to finish the grand final as a touch judge.
Retirement from Refereeing
Danzey's refereeing career ended on 4 April 1983. After refereeing a game between St. George and Canterbury-Bankstown, he had a health issue. After this, he became the Referees' Co-ordinator for the NSWRL. This meant he helped manage other referees.
Personal Life
Jack Danzey was married to Kay, and they had six children. One of their daughters, Lynn-Maree, is a film and television director.
Away from rugby league, Danzey was a teacher. He taught physical education and helped students with their career choices. He worked at several schools, including Dulwich High School and Birrong Boys High School.
Jack Danzey's father, who was also named Jack, also played rugby league. He played for the Newtown Jets and Balmain Tigers in the 1940s.
