Jacki Parry's Early Life and Art Education

Jacki Parry was born in Australia. She started her art journey studying sculpture in Melbourne from 1959 to 1961. Later, she moved to Scotland and studied printmaking at the Glasgow School of Art from 1970 to 1974. She continued her studies there, focusing on printed textiles in 1975.

Teaching Art and Inspiring Students

Before becoming a full-time artist, Jacki Parry spent time teaching and traveling around Australia, Europe, and Asia from 1961 to 1970.

After her studies, she returned to the Glasgow School of Art. She worked as a studio assistant in the printmaking department. Later, she became a lecturer, teaching about papermaking and fine art. She even led the printmaking department for many years, sharing her knowledge until 2006.

Jacki Parry's Artistic Career

Jacki Parry is famous for how she uses paper in her art. She doesn't just print on paper; she uses paper itself as a main material for her artworks. She often explores how landscapes change and how information is collected and used.

She moved to Scotland in 1965. In 1972, while still a student, she was one of eight artists who started the Glasgow Print Studio. This was a big step for artists in Glasgow! In 1985, she also created the Paper Workshop in Glasgow, a place for artists to work with paper.

Jacki Parry learned special papermaking techniques in Barcelona and even in Japan from a master named Tadao Endo. She is also a member of the Royal Scottish Academy, which is a big honor for artists in Scotland. In 1984, she appeared in a BBC Scotland film called 'The Lunch Party', discussing art with other famous Scottish artists and writers.

Her art often shows how nature changes and how we get and use information. For example, her 1988 exhibition, Daly River Night, was inspired by her trip back to Australia. She explored the Daly River in the North-West Territory. Her art showed the beauty and power of nature in that area.

In 2012, the Glasgow Women's Library celebrated its anniversary. They asked 21 artists and 21 writers to create new works. Jacki Parry was one of these artists. She created a special street map of Glasgow, naming the streets after important women featured in the library's history tours. This was a creative way to honor women's history!
