Jacqueline Anne Woodburne (born 5 February 1956) is a famous Australian actress. She is well-known for her many roles in TV shows called soap operas. After finishing drama school, Jackie starred in shows like The Young Doctors, Cop Shop, and Prisoner. Since 1994, she has played the much-loved character Susan Kennedy in the popular TV show Neighbours.
In the 1980s, Jackie also appeared in several miniseries, which are like short TV series. One of these was 1915, for which she was nominated for a Logie Award. By 1985, Jackie had starred in a big TV show on every major network in Australia. More recently, since 2014, she has been the voice of Dr. Anastasia Black in the sci-fi comedy audio series Night Terrace.
Early life
Jackie Woodburne was born in Carrickfergus, Northern Ireland. Her father was a police officer. She has two older brothers, John and Stephen. When she was three years old, her family moved to Australia.
They thought her father could join the Australian police force easily. However, due to different rules, he was not able to. Jackie grew up in Frankston, Victoria, Australia. She went to Forest Hill Primary School and later to Monterey Secondary College and Karingal High School.
Career beginnings
Jackie decided to become an actress when she was 22. She enrolled in the National Theatre Drama School in Melbourne. There, she met Janet Andrewartha, who would later become her co-star in Neighbours. Jackie graduated from drama school in 1980.
Her first major role was playing Nurse Maggie Gordon in The Young Doctors. In 1981, she appeared in the TV drama The Patchwork Hero. She also played Josie in the miniseries Outbreak of Love.
Jackie starred as Dianne Bendetto in the ABC miniseries 1915. This show was about how World War I affected people's lives, including women. For her role as Dianne, Jackie was nominated for a Logie Award. This award is a big honour in Australian television.
Major TV roles
Jackie Woodburne became very busy in the 1980s. She had a main role in a big TV show on every major network. After her time as Maggie in The Young Doctors, she appeared in the miniseries Sara Dane. She also played Gina Rossi in Cop Shop.
In 1983, she appeared three times in the popular show A Country Practice. She also had a brief role in the very first episode of Sons and Daughters.
Jackie is best known for two long-running roles in soap operas. In 1985, she joined the cast of Prisoner as Julie "Chook" Egbert. Julie was a very smart character who ended up in prison for theft. Jackie was meant to be on the show for six months, seeing it as a way to boost her career.
In 1990, she tried out for the role of Pippa Fletcher in Home and Away. However, her friend Debra Lawrance got the part instead.
Her second long-running role is playing Susan Kennedy in Neighbours. She has been playing Susan since 1994. Interestingly, Jackie had played the sister of Alan Fletcher's character in Cop Shop before they became husband and wife on Neighbours.
In 2005, Jackie was nominated for an award at the international Rose d'Or television festival. This was for Best Female Performance in a Soap Opera.
Recent work
In 2014, Jackie became the main star of Night Terrace. This is a comedy audio series where she plays Dr. Anastasia Black. She described her character as being "basically a female Doctor Who." The series won an award called the Convenors' Award for Excellence. A second season was released in 2016. Both seasons have been played on BBC Radio 4 Extra in the UK.
In March 2015, Jackie appeared in a special documentary. It was called Neighbours 30th: The Stars Reunite. This show celebrated 30 years of Neighbours and aired in Australia and the UK.
