Early Life and Education
Jacqueline Young was born in Honolulu, which was then called the Hawaii Territory. She finished high school at Punahou School in 1952. Jacqueline was of Korean heritage.
She loved learning and continued her education throughout her life. She earned her first college degree from the University of Hawaii in 1969. Later, she received a master's degree from Old Dominion University in 1982. She then completed her doctorate degree from Union Institute & University in 1989.
Public Service Career
Jacqueline Young was a dedicated public servant. She was first elected to the Hawaii House of Representatives in 1990. She represented the 20th District as a Democrat. She won with 54.02% of the votes.
Re-election and Leadership
In 1992, she was re-elected to the State House, this time for the 51st district. She won again, getting 59.76% of the votes. In January 1993, her fellow lawmakers chose her to be the Vice-Speaker of the State House. This was an important leadership role.
Running for Lieutenant Governor
In 1994, instead of running for her House seat again, Jacqueline Young decided to run for Lieutenant Governor of Hawaii. She sought the Democratic nomination but did not win. Another representative, Mazie Hirono, won that race.
State Senate Campaigns
Jacqueline Young also ran for the Hawaii State Senate's 25th District in 1996. She lost by a very small number of votes (just 187 votes). She ran for the same Senate seat again in 2002 but was not successful.
Judicial Commission Role
In 2013, Jacqueline Young was appointed to the Hawaii Judicial Selection Commission. This commission helps choose judges for the state. She served as the Vice-Chair for four years. In 2017, she was re-appointed and served a two-year term as the Chairwoman of the commission.
Later Life and Legacy
Jacqueline Young was also involved with the Hawaii American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU). The ACLU works to protect people's rights and freedoms.
Jacqueline Young passed away on February 10, 2019, in Honolulu, Hawaii. She is remembered by her four children and three grandchildren.
