Jacksons: A Historic Railway Stop
Jacksons has an interesting history, especially when it comes to trains.
The Midland Line Connection
From 1894, Jacksons was an important railway hub. It was the end of the line for the Midland Line coming from Stillwater, passing through Moana. This meant that trains would stop here before the line was extended further.
The railway station in Jacksons first opened its doors on March 1, 1894. It used a building that was moved from another place called Teremakau. The station served the area for many years before it finally closed on November 3, 1986.
The Story of Jackson Tavern
Jacksons is also known for its historic hotel, which has changed names over the years.
From Accommodation House to Tavern
The building now known as the Jackson Tavern started its life as the Jackson’s Accommodation House. Michael Jackson bought it in 1870. He and his brother Adam had moved to New Zealand from Scotland and had spent some time looking for gold in Otago.
The hotel was a popular stop for coaches traveling between Christchurch and Hokitika. However, in 1871, a big flash flood unfortunately swept the hotel away. It was quickly rebuilt and renamed the Perry Range Hotel. In 1910, it was rebuilt again. The hotel stayed in the Jackson family until 1970, when it was renamed the Jackson Tavern.
Adam Jackson, Michael's brother, later moved to Canterbury. His oldest daughter, Jessie, married William Aicken. They started another guesthouse called the Aickens Accommodation House, about 10 kilometers away in a place called Aickens.
