History of the Roar
The Jacksonville Jaguars officially announced the creation of the Roar in 1994. This was a year after the city of Jacksonville was chosen to have an NFL team. Delores Weaver, whose husband Wayne Weaver was the first owner of the Jaguars, took a special interest in the cheerleaders. She helped choose the team members and even helped design their uniforms. She also approved their dance routines.
Becoming a Roar Cheerleader
Each spring, new cheerleaders are chosen for the Roar. If someone from the previous year does not return, a new person takes their place. People who want to join are judged on interviews and how well they can dance. The selection process has three rounds to pick the final team. The Roar squad practices several times every week throughout the year. The only break is in March, when new auditions are held.
Roar as Team Ambassadors
Besides performing at games, the Roar members are also like special helpers for the team. From May to February, they act as goodwill ambassadors for the Jaguars. They often join Jaxson de Ville, the team mascot, at events around the Jacksonville metropolitan area. At these events, they sign autographs and take pictures with fans. Steve Livingstone, who works for the Jaguars, said that fans are very excited to meet the cheerleaders. The Roar also travels with NFL tours to entertain US military members around the world.
Roar Calendar
Since 1998, the Roar has created a special calendar each year. It features pictures of the cheerleaders.
Junior Roar Program
Every year, about 250 girls aged 6 to 17 can join the Junior Roar program. This program includes a three-day clinic held at TIAA Bank Field, which is the Jaguars' home stadium. During the clinic, the cheerleaders from the Roar teach dance skills and lead fun team-building activities. The Junior Roar members then get to perform during halftime at a Jaguars game! The cheerleaders also help mentor the girls and encourage their interests.
