The Story of the Jacob Light House
Building a New Home
In the late 1800s, Washington Court House grew a lot. Many new railroad lines came to the city. This made it an important place for businesses. Jacob Light, a tailor and merchant, was one of the people who moved there.
On May 10, 1875, Jacob Light bought a large piece of land. It was just south of the city's main area. By June of that year, he started building his new house.
Italianate Style Features
The Jacob Light House is made of strong brick. It sits on a stone base. The roof is covered with slate tiles. The house has an "L" shape, which was common for its time.
It is a great example of the Italianate style. This style often includes a low, flat-looking hip roof. The front porch has special hand-carved supports. The windows have decorative shutters and pediments (triangular shapes above them). There are also fancy brackets under the roof's edge, called the cornice.
The porch supports are very special. They show how skilled local woodcarvers were back then. These details make the house unique.
A House Preserved Through Time
Jacob Light's family owned the house for 61 years. They sold it in 1936. Later owners took good care of the house. They made very few changes to it.
Even more than 50 years later, in the late 1980s, the house still looked great. It was one of only about 20 Italianate-style homes left in the city.
In early 1988, the Jacob Light House was added to the National Register of Historic Places. This means it is recognized as an important historical building. It earned this honor because of its special and well-preserved architecture.
