The Jacob Purdy House is a very old and important building in White Plains, New York. It played a special role during the American Revolutionary War. This war was when the American colonies fought for their freedom from Great Britain.
General George Washington, who was the leader of the American army, used this house as his headquarters. This means he stayed here and made important plans. He used it in 1778 and possibly also in 1776 during the Battle of White Plains.
A Glimpse into History
The Jacob Purdy House was first built in 1721. A person named Samuel Horton was its original builder. Later, in 1730, Samuel Purdy, who was Jacob Purdy's father, bought the house.
Jacob Purdy himself became the owner around 1785. This was after the Revolutionary War had ended. Some members of the Purdy family had supported the British during the war. They were known as United Empire Loyalists.
Restoring a Historic Home
In the 1960s, the Jacob Purdy House needed a lot of work. It was carefully repaired and brought back to its original look. Then, in 1973, the entire building was moved to its current spot.
More restoration work happened around 1980. Professional builders worked on it. Local teenagers also helped through a special training program. This helped them learn important skills.
Today, the Jacob Purdy House is the main office for the White Plains Historical Society. This group helps to preserve and share the history of White Plains. The house was officially added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1979. This list includes important historical sites across the United States.
