Jacoba van den Brande (born July 4, 1735 – died August 14, 1794) was an important Dutch woman. She is best known for starting the very first science academy in the world that was only for women. This happened in a city called Middelburg.

Jacoba van den Brande was born in Middelburg, a city in the Netherlands, on July 4, 1735. Her parents were Johan Pieter van den Brande and Mary Heron Berg. Both of her parents came from well-known families in the Zeeland region.

Her Marriage and Family Life

In 1760, Jacoba married Johan Adriaen van de Perre. He was a member of the States-General, which was like the parliament of the Netherlands at that time. He served there between 1768 and 1779.

Johan Adriaen van de Perre was a big supporter of many different groups and academies. Jacoba also became known for supporting these kinds of organizations.

Founding the First All-Female Science Academy

Jacoba van den Brande became famous for her important work. She was the founder and first leader of the Physics/Natural History Society of Women in Middelburg. In Dutch, its name was Natuurkundig Genootschap der Dames te Middelburg.

This society was started in 1785. It was the very first science academy in the world that was made only for women. This was a huge step forward for women in science.

Jacoba van den Brande passed away in Middelburg on August 14, 1794. She was 59 years old. Her legacy lives on as a pioneer who opened doors for women in the world of science.
