Jaime Baço, also known as Jaume Baco or Jacomart, was an important Spanish painter. He was born around 1410 and passed away in 1461. Jaime Baço came from Valencia, a city in Spain.

The Life of Jaime Baço

We don't know many details about Jaime Baço's early life. He started his painting career in his hometown of Valencia.

Travels and Royal Connections

In 1442, something exciting happened: King Alfonso V of Aragon asked Jaime Baço to come paint in Naples, a city in Italy. While in Naples, Jaime Baço had a big impact on other artists there, like Colantonio. He inspired many local painters.

After a few years, in 1445, he returned to Valencia. But his travels weren't over! Just one year later, the king asked him to go back to Italy again. This time, Jaime Baço visited famous cities like Rome and Tivoli. In Tivoli, he met an important church leader named Alfonso Borgia, who later became Pope Calixtus III.

By 1451, Jaime Baço was back in Valencia for good. He spent the rest of his life painting and working in his home city.

Jaime Baço's Art Style

Jaime Baço's painting style was unique. Even though he traveled to Italy, he didn't really adopt the new art trends of the Italian Renaissance. Instead, he kept a strong connection to the style of Early Netherlandish painting. This style often featured very detailed work, bright colors, and a focus on realistic textures.

Known Artworks

One of Jaime Baço's most famous and only officially documented works is the Retable of Catì. A retable is a large, often decorated, structure placed behind the altar in a church. He worked on this piece in 1460 with another artist who followed his style, Juan Rexach.

Other paintings are believed to be by Jaime Baço, even if they aren't officially documented. These include the Borgia Triptych, which is a painting with three panels, found in the Collegiate church of Xàtiva. He is also thought to have painted the panels showing St. Benedict and St. Ildephonsus that are now in the Cathedral of Valencia.
