Jacqueline Victoire Brookes (born July 24, 1930 – died April 26, 2013) was an American actress. She was well-known for her work in movies, on television, and especially on stage. She performed in many plays both off-Broadway and on Broadway.

Early Life and Education

Jacqueline Brookes was born in Montclair, New Jersey. Her parents were Maria Victoire and Frederick Jack Brookes. Her father was an investment banker. Jacqueline went to a French-speaking school in New York. Because of this, she could speak French very well.

She studied at the University of Iowa and earned a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree. After that, she received a special scholarship called a Fulbright Scholarship. This allowed her to study acting in London at the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art.

Stage Career

Jacqueline Brookes loved acting on stage. In the 1960s, she spent several summers performing in the Shakespeare Festival. This festival took place at the Old Globe Theater in San Diego. She acted in many famous plays by William Shakespeare. Some of these plays included Antony and Cleopatra, A Winter's Tale, and A Midsummer Night's Dream.

During this time, she also played important roles in other Shakespeare plays. She was Rosalind in As You Like It at New Mexico State University. She played Katherine in The Taming of the Shrew at the University of British Columbia. She also performed as Beatrice in Much Ado About Nothing at the Shakespeare Festival in Stratford, Connecticut.

Teaching and Later Years

Besides acting, Jacqueline Brookes was also a dedicated teacher. She taught acting at the Circle in the Square Theatre School. She was also a lifetime member of The Actors Studio. This is a famous organization for actors.

Jacqueline Brookes appeared in several movies. Some of her notable films include Ghost Story, The Entity, Paternity, The Good Son, and Losing Isaiah.

She passed away at the age of 82. Her death was caused by a type of cancer called lymphoma.

Awards and Recognition

Jacqueline Brookes received awards for her amazing acting. In 1955, she won a Theatre World Award for her role in the play The Cretan Woman. She also won an Obie Award in 1963. This award was for Best Actress for her performance in Six Characters in Search of an Author.
